 BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE CONDITIONS

Heart Disease

Heart disease is a term used to describe a number of different heart conditions and problems.

These include angina, heart failure and abnormal heart rhythms in the main.

Stroke

A stroke, previously known medically as a cerebrovascular accident (CVA), is the rapidly developing loss of brain function(s) due to disturbance in the blood supply to the brain. This can be due to ischemia (lack of blood flow) caused by blockage (thrombosis, arterial embolism), or a haemorrhage(leakage of blood). As a result, the affected area of the brain is unable to function, leading to inability to move one or more limbs on one side of the body, inability to understand or formulate speech, or an inability to see one side of the visual field.

SOME STARTLING FACTS - DID YOU KNOW?

Every year over 190,000 people die of a cardiovascular disease, that is just under 500 people every day!
Every 6 minutes someone in the UK will have a stroke!
Every 5 minutes someone in the UK will die of a heart attack .
25% of all strokes occur in people under the age of 65 – ie during their working lives .
Around three times more women die from stroke than from breast cancer in the UK .

Incidences of both these conditions are very high in some communities; in the UK Asian community the incidence of heart disease is 33% higher than for an Anglo-Irish population and for stroke it is twice as high.

The only way these statistics will improve is through better education and research, so please support the Heart and Stroke Research Campaign and together we can MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
